DEPARTMENT OF CHEMICAL PATHOLOGY.

SCHOOL OF MEDICINE.

COLLEGE OF MEDICAL SCIENCES.

UNIVERSITY OF BENIN.

Pathology is a very diversified and all-embracing subject. It comprises Chemical Pathology, Morbid Anatomy (Histopathology), Haematology and Medical Microbiology which are all disciplines themselves.

For a long time after its inception in 1972, the pathology division remained as one department under one administrative headship. Chemical Pathology (clinical chemistry or clinical biochemistry as it is sometimes referred to) is a scientifically dynamic and growing discipline in medical practice with room for further development. Chemical Pathology along with other arms that make up the pathology division became separate autonomous and full-fledged departments in the University of Benin in June 1979. However, there is still administrative and academic inter-departmental co-operation for the purpose of conducting the comprehensive MBBS Part III Pathology Examinations. The department of chemical pathology remains a hub of academic activities for both students and researchers alike.

MISSION

Our mission is to provide sound undergraduate and postgraduate education in Chemical Pathology.

VISION

Our vision is to empower students to acquire practical and theoretical knowledge/clinical acumen to enable them make accurate diagnosis from laboratory results for quality patient care.

OBJECTIVES OF THE DEPARTMENT

  1. To enable students understand how the common diseases may be related to and subdivided into their main biochemical components.
  2. To give the students an understanding of how biochemistry relates to common diseases.
  3. To enable the students describe and recognize biochemical changes associated with metabolic disorders.
  4. To teach the students the principles of laboratory investigations and the interpretation of results of biochemical laboratory investigations.
  5. To provide a broad research base for all researchers in and outside the department.
